It’s free! Take a walk or a bike ride (trail map) over the West Duwamish Waterway. If the swing span for boat traffic opens, you will have to stop. You will want to stop anyway. Watch the boat and train traffic below the bridge. Gaze at Mount Rainier to the south and at our fair city to the north. We saw two dozen Canada geese swimming below us on our visit.
The concrete bridge opened in 1991. It connects West Seattle and Harbor Island. (Map)
A freighter collided with the original West Seattle Bridge in 1978. The Antonio Chavez hit the bridge in the middle of the night. No one was hurt but the bridge was stuck open.
Now Seattle has two bridges between West Seattle and the rest of the world: the SW Spokane Street Bridge is the smaller, lower bridge which opens for water traffic, and The West Seattle Bridge.
IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE OF SEATTLE OR CANNOT VISIT THIS BRIDGE, VISIT A BRIDGE. WHAT DOES IT SPAN? CAN YOU WALK OR RIDE ACROSS IT? TELL US ABOUT IT IN THE COMMENTS.
