Sights to See in Seattle

SOUTHWEST SPOKANE STREET BRIDGE–Seattle Sights to see soon, for immigrants and other folk in the area

It’s free! Take a walk or a bike ride (trail map) over the West Duwamish Waterway. If the swing span for boat traffic opens, you will have to stop. You will want to stop anyway. Watch the boat and train traffic below the bridge. Gaze at Mount Rainier to the south and our fair city to the north. 20160814_13295420160814_130827_00120160814_132926_00120160814_132948_002We saw two dozen Canada geese swimming below us on our recent visit.

The concrete bridge opened in 1991. It connects West Seattle and Harbor Island. (Map)

A freighter collided with the original West Seattle Bridge in 1978. The Antonio Chavez hit the bridge in the middle of the night. No one was hurt but the bridge was stuck open.

Now Seattle has two bridges between West Seattle and the rest of the world: the SW Spokane Street Bridge is the smaller, lower bridge which opens for water traffic, and The West Seattle Bridge.

There will be some construction along the route for the next months in 2016.

IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE OF SEATTLE OR CANNOT VISIT THIS BRIDGE, VISIT A BRIDGE. WHAT DOES IT SPAN? CAN YOU WALK OR RIDE ACROSS IT? TELL US ABOUT IT IN THE COMMENTS.

  1. Sounds interesting. I always pass the bridge to go to work but it will be my first time that I will go down and walk there.

  2. Under the bridge it is beautiful, I-5 highway is on top of the bridge. on the other side is west Seattle bridge. There is a lot of big bridge holders under it. There was a couple of homeless folks there. I went there on Saturday.
